Malas and Mantras

One of the most crippling obstacles that can stand in the way of reaching our dreams is negative thoughts. This is something that I definitely struggle with from time to time. Negative phrases or words can seep their way into our thoughts and alter the perception of our reality. It takes a conscious effort to shift away from this way of thinking. Our minds can be programed to automatically think the worst of a situation, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Negative thinking is like a bad habit we all have, and all we have to do is break it.

An effective way to do this is through the use of a mala and a mantra. Unless you frequent your local yoga studio on a regular basis this may be the first time that you hear of these terms. A mala is a beaded necklace or bracelet used for keeping count while mentally or orally repeating a mantra, which is somewhat similar to the function of a rosary. A mantra is simply a phrase, sound or prayer repeated frequently and is commonly used as an aid in meditation. Taking the time each day to mentally repeat a phrase that symbolises something you either wish to release or bring into your life can be very effective. It helps to keep you focused on your goal and switch your way of thinking. Words can be a powerful thing and what you think can have an impact on what manifests in your life.

Simply choose a phrase that you are most intuitively drawn to or one that represents a goal of yours. Below are some example mantras that you may want to use. Once you choose a mantra stick with that one for at least a week. Some mantras can be effective for years to come, while others may only serve you for a brief time. Do what feels right and trust your intuition. My personal favourite mantra is "I am calm" since we all live in a very hectic and stressful world.

  • I am strong / calm / loved / healthy / adventurous / patient / confident / happy

  • I can easily let go of what no longer serves me

  • I trust my intuition

  • I love myself

  • I have abundance

When using your mala begin by first getting comfortable. You may want to light some incense or practice some deep breathing exercies to help you releax. Remember that this is a special time dedicated just for yourself. Clear your mind and hold the first bead with your fingers (the one next to the guru bead) and guide your hand along your mala necklace or bracelet. Repeat your mantra either verbally or mentally each time your fingers reach a new bead.

There are typically 108 beads on a necklace (28 beads on a bracelet) plus the guru bead and are usually made out of gemstones or crystals. Necklaces cost around $90 and bracelets cost around $45, but you could also make your own using regular beads for cheaper. If you do decide to purchase an authentic mala made of crystals you will want to be sure that you care for your mala the same way that you would care for your crystals. Malas can be purchsed online or at your logal yoga studio.

Take care and best wishes on your path towards healing.
